WOW I'm not sure I can handle this one...BUT if I had to choose I'd would say the JAM after Weather Report on Dick's Picks 12.

This piece of music might just be my favorite Dead jam ever and it has never failed me. Definitely NOT party music though - this must be listened to in a quiet space with no distraction so you can just float away on it...

I should really pay more attention to this jam. I've heard it a few times but always paid more attention to the rest of that disc. It was the first DP disc I ever owned (DP 12, disc 3). That being said its not surprising i "didn't get" that jam so early in my listening.

I totally understand that, there were a lot of 'ah ha!' moments for me when I went back and listened to certain jams or pieces from early in my Dead listening that I just didn't get.

My biggest breakthrough was about 3 years ago. I had a terrible flu for days. All I could do was lay in bed and listen to music or watch TV. Naturally, I threw my Dead collection on shuffle and just started REALLY listening. That's when I finally realized just how great this band truly is.

I would definitely suggest going back and hearing this Jam again; your patience will be rewarded!

right on dude.

I recall my first time ever listening to a whole dark star. It was DP 2 and I was driving alone from Minnesota (btw these lone drives were always great to get a few hours of pure dead jammin). At any rate I was so proud that I finally listened to a whole version but it never really grabbed me. I enjoyed it enough to not change the song, but it was partly a goal to hear it all. I now listen to it and think YES! perfection!

I always think about this stuff when none of my friends like dark star or other dead for that matter. They just don't have the trained ears for it.

You read my mind, that whole 'trained ear' thing. A big reason I think most people I know just don't 'hear' what I do in their music. I don't fault them obviously, but sometimes it's really frustrating to know just how good something is and you just want to yell "aren't you HEARING this!"

I can also relate to those long road trips. Me and my GF used to be long distance for quite a while, and coming home I would always throw on at least an hour of Dead for the drive. Some of my most peaceful (and rockin') memories ever :)

i think i have to go with this one too. spring/summer '74 is probably my favorite era for the band and this track is a perfect example of the kind of unique jams that were popping up at almost every show. it still amazes me that they were comfortable being as loose and open to improvisation as they were while playing for large crowds in large venues. there haven't been many bands in the history of popular music who have taken those kinds of chances on stages like that. but, yeah, awesome jam. multiple themes explored, jerry plays great throughout, and there is a nice jazzy clementine-esque bit toward the end that i can't recall hearing in any other shows from the year.
